The Mediterranean Section of the International Plato Society was founded in Pisa in 2013, on the occasion of the X Symposium Platonicum, as a regional section of the International Plato Society. It gathers together scholars from Mediterranean countries whose researches confirm the importance of the contribution of this geographical area to Platonic studies.

Since the Symposia of the International Plato Society focus on Plato’s individual dialogues, the meetings of the Mediterranean Section of the International Plato Society aim to investigate cross-cutting themes.

The Meeting of the Mediterranean Section of the International Plato Society on the theme Truth: Plato and the Sophists will be held on 9th-11th october 2015 at Aix-Marseille University in Aix-en-Provence (France).

Plato is usually thought to be hostile to the sophistic in contrast to philosophy. Nevertheless, we can observe that, on the topic of Truth, a lively discussion of sophistic thesis has a large space in his dialogues. Aix-en-Provence Meeting aims to re-examine the question of Truth in Plato’s dialogues, in their context as in their reception, on the background of the fundamental sophistic contribution to this topic.
